Pour Some Sugar on Me....

In one of my previous posts, I mentioned how I had challenged myself to start making some of the projects that I had pinned on my DIY Pinterest board.  I think I mentioned one project per week.  You can tell by the "project posts" what an epic failure that was.  Since I can live with it, so should you.  :-)

My son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter have been visiting this week.  My daughter-in-law, Stephanie, and I both love Pinterest.  So, while she was here, I decided to conduct a few scientific experiments, I mean tackle one of my Pinterest projects, by making some sugar scrubs.  These actually did turn out to be scientific experiments in that balancing the ratio of oil to the sugar base does require some experimentation.

The first one we made was a Brown Sugar Scrub.

The ingredients were:
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract

I did not melt the coconut oil but left it solid. Blend your sugars, add oil and vanilla extract and mix.

Pour into a small jar.

After mixing, we gave it a test run.  I felt like a greased pig at the State Fair.  This mixture was much too "greasy" and I had to wash my hands with soap to remove the oil.  It looks pretty, smells good and is usable the way it is.  Our hands were very soft after using this scrub, but I will need to add some of the sugar blend to absorb the excess oil.

Our second experiment was a Pumpkin Spice Sugar Scrub.

The ingredients were:
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
1 cup coconut oil
2 tablespoons pumpkin pie spice
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves

I altered this recipe by using only 1/2 cup coconut oil.  This time I melted the oil; however, I don't think it makes any difference as to whether it is solid or liquid.

I mixed the sugars, pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg and cloves.  Then we added the melted oil, mixed and poured into 2 jars.

This blend was much better in the "greasy feel" department.  The mixture felt a little more rough and granulated, but there was no oily residue left on my hands.  Success! I think these homemade sugar scrubs are excellent and that you just have to keep working with them to find the mixture that feels good to you.

When you store them, be sure to store them in the bathroom NOT the kitchen pantry.  You definitely don't want this ending up in your next gingerbread cake, but then again, it might taste alright.  After all, the ingredients are edible.

Maybe add a little whipped cream on top for that perfect after dinner dessert!

Enjoy!

  1. I have never tried to make a sugar scrub. I am surprised you do not have to refrigerate the scrub. It sounds delicious - I would be tempted to taste it.

    1. I suppose since it doesn't contain "perishables", there is no need to refrigerate it...unless I missed that part of the instructions...LOL. I was very tempted because it smelled so good, but I stopped just short of putting the spoon in my mouth! :-)
