Through The Looking Glass

So, after ALL of  my project failures, I decided to give it one more try.  What can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment!

On my Pinterest board, I have several DYI projects for Mercury Glass Mason Jars.

Except I didn't want to do mason jars because I love my little blue mason jars and have no desire to change their color.  And I didn't want to go out and buy new mason jars for this project.

Back in February, I wrote a post, Winter and A Touch of Spring.  If you click here, you can go back to read it or at least look at one of the photos...or I can post that photo here...

See those little milk bottles, and the Krylon paint, and the spray bottles?  I bought those waaaaayyyyy back then for this project.  Yes, I realize there are mason jars in the picture, but those were used for a pickle fiasco.  I will save that story for another day.  Let's just stay focused on the milk bottle project.

I used these milk bottles.  You can find them at Walmart.  Cheap.  Truly.

On the Kindergarten Difficulty Scale or KDS, this project rates about a 2.  If you can press a button, you too can have these little jewels in your home.  The exception is that you HAVE to be a little OCD or they will not turn out like this.

As you all know (because everyone but ME has created a mercury glass project) you mix equal parts of vinegar and water in a spray bottle.  You spray the mixture on the bottle and them immediately follow that with the Looking Glass spray paint.  If you check out the link on the first photo, you will find she did it a different way.  That's not the way I did it, I just liked that photo better.  :-)

Wait for the paint to dry and then wipe off to pop the water bubbles and you have a mercury glass look.  Well, I did that, and I didn't like the look.

While I am able to BUY these types of imperfect objects in the store, I am unable to make the imperfect object and be satisfied with how it looks.  This is where the OCD comes in.

After the first coat of everything dried, I sprayed on another coat.  Vinegar and water followed by a coat of paint.  Let it dry.  Then a 3rd coat, followed by a 4th coat.  Only after the 4th coat was I satisfied with the look.

I really do like this better than the regular mercury glass look.  I knew I would be using them to hold silverware and wanted them to stand out rather than blend in.

So being OCD and doing craft projects is not all bad.  And you get help from the hubby.  He stands over you to make sure you don't get paint overspray on the garage floor to make sure you have the nozzle pointed towards the bottle and not your face and to show you how to layer the coats.  He will kindly fix the nozzle on the spray bottle for you and stay close while you are taking photos.  We're tight like that!

See, K2 level.  Easy Peasy!  ~doing the Cabbage Patch dance!  Or the Lawn Mower...take your pick!  WHAT??!!  You don't know how to do the Cabbage Patch dance?  Weeelllll, let two of my favorite guys, Jimmy Fallon and Will Smith, show you how..

Can't Touch This!

    1. Thank you so very much Carole! I appreciate it greatly! I noticed when I started blogging a few months ago, that there weren’t many bloggers who shared the things that didn’t turn out just right or blog about the problems they encountered. If you don’t share those things, how are the rest of us going to learn that it doesn’t always turn out perfect? LOL I figured I would share the good, the bad and the ugly! :-) Thank you again and have a wonderful day!

    1. Amy, thank you so much! It was more difficult than I expected and some of the blogs I read didn’t mention some of the issues I encountered. I would definitely do it again though because I was pleased with how they turned out and I now know what to expect! Again, thank you! Have a wonderful day!!

    1. LOL…I’m sorry, I had no idea!! But thank you so much!! I appreciate it greatly!! They weren’t as easy as I thought, but they weren’t that difficult either. I suppose I wasn’t sure what I needed to do to make them look like others I had seen. I finally decided they would look how they looked and I wasn’t going to worry about it or compare them to others. Thank you again!!

    1. It was difficult for me to work on these, but I just figured whatever happened, happened and if they turned out badly, then it was another funny post…LOL

They didn’t turn out like other mercury glass projects that I’ve seen, but I was pleased as punch and love them with my vintage crate and the silver.

  27. Thanks for the tips Benita! Question: Did you use vinegar/water spray between all coats? Or just 1st and 2nd?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You are welcome Beth and thank you so much for visiting my blog. I used the vinegar/water spray between all coats. I'm sure you could switch it up and only use it between every other coat. I don't think there is a wrong way to do this...just repeat the steps until you get the desired look. :-)
