Yet Another Stencil Project...

If you have been reading my blog over the last few years, you know that I am not proficient at stenciling.  As a matter of fact, I'm an absolute failure!  Don't believe me?  Well, just hop on over here and here...you will see!  Oh, and let's not forget my lumpy pillow...where I screwed up ironing on a stencil! I mean, it is IRON ON for goodness sake!

Well, you will be happy to know that I finally have a successful, yes you read that right, successful stencil project under my belt!  YAY!!

My youngest son moved to a new rental home and I wanted to make him a little something for the new place.  I found this cute cutting board at Hobby Lobby, 40% off, and knew it would be the perfect house-warming gift for him.  While at Hobby Lobby, I found these cute stencils.

I started to pass them by but knew that I needed to really try to conquer my fear of stencils.  The stencil pack I purchased was perfect for me to use because they are self-adhesive stencils.  I also picked up 2 different colors of green paint...I wanted to blend the greens to look a little more natural for my leaves.  I know, I was really stepping out of the comfort zone! :-)  I wiped down the cutting board...

...peeled off the two stencils I decided to use and started to paint.  I used a little of each color and tried to blend them as I went along.

Finishing the first one, I moved to the second one before pulling them off the board.

While my paint dried, I washed the stencils and let them air dry before returning them to the pack.

After the paint was dry, I applied a coat of dark wax to seal the paint and protect the board.  Finally!! A stencil project that wasn't a disaster!

And I have a nice gift for my son!  Two-fer!! Time for my cabbage patch dance...

    1. Thank you so much Brenda! Those peel and stick stencils work so great for me! I struggle trying to get the traditional stencils to stay in place and not have paint bleed underneath the cutout. Love and hugs!

  4. What wax did you use? I've never used waxes.

    1. I used a cocoa colored wax I found at Hobby Lobby…they are so easy to use and will last you forever. It truly only takes a tiny bit on your rag. This wood soaked it up nicely. Love and hugs!

    1. Stenciling has been the bane of my existence...well, that and using a table saw and using a nail gun, etc. If you decide to try a project, get these peel and stick with the adhesive already on the back. They will save you from so much heartache...the heartache that I've experienced with many failed stenciling projects...LOL Thank you so much! My son loves it! Hugs!

    1. Thank you so much Lucy! As I told Lisa, get the stencils that have adhesive on the back. It makes the job so much easier because the stencil doesn't move around on you. Also, get those little tampy sponges with a handle and don't use a lot of paint on it. That's the best advice I can give...LOL Hugs!

  9. Sooooo did you just wax the whole board after you were done? This is just for looks? or can he actually cut on it? Very cute. I'm going to tackle something. You are inspiring me :)

    1. Thank you! I did wax the entire board, front and back. It is just for looks. I'm sure there are some waxes that are food safe, but this one isn't. Girl, this was such an easy thing...those peel and stick stencils make a world of difference! Now, if I can learn to play with crayons, I can mix some different colors! LOL Glad I can be of help! :-) Love you!

  10. Super cute, Benita!! I'm a disaster with stencils, too, don't feel bad! My one successful project is the sign at the end of my lane....I ordered a custom stencil, the paints, brushes, etc....and Sweetie took over the project!! It came out perfect!

    1. LOL, oh honey, you sound just like me! Edward has had to step in a time or two on these for me as well. I don't know why I struggle so much with this area of crafting, but I do. It intimidates me when I walk down the aisle of stencils...they all laugh, point and mock me. I mean, this is something a 5-year-old can do and I am usually to the point of tears before I get started...LOL Thank you so much! Love and hugs!
