I know I have never shown you guys the upstairs part of our house. While it's is nothing special, it is very different from the downstairs...I usually tell everyone that our house has a split personality. Downstairs is light and airy...
...while upstairs is dark and heavy (I had to slow the shutter speed and open the aperture all the way to get this much light in - it never looks this light).
We had to purchase a smaller-sized sofa to fit under the angled roof line and one that would not go too much further out past the wall. I used the poofs as an end table so that they could double as extra seating space if we needed it. No room for a tall lamp on the poof-end of the sofa. It will hit the ceiling.
I'm still looking for a narrow coffee table that we might could use up here. Several problems...(1) that vintage door, which leads to the hubster's office, (2) there is not a lot of distance between the sofa and TV, (3) a coffee table would be right in the walkway when you hit the top of the stairs...I'm hesitant to obstruct getting into other rooms up there.
The 2nd floor of our home has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. All of the bedrooms each have one wall of shiplap. We use one of the bedrooms for my office, yep, it is that room flooded with sunlight. The bedrooms and office are not as dark since they all have one window.
There is no natural light that comes into the TV area and the ceiling has weird angles. Additionally, the entire upstairs has carpet, with the exception of the 2 bathrooms. They have pretty tile floors...the tile matches the tile surround on the fireplace.
I have left all the walls upstairs white because I didn't want to do anything to make it darker. Unfortunately, I just couldn't take it anymore so I decided we needed a board and batten wall to try to make the TV/sitting area a bit more appealing. Thus began the project...
...sorry that the photo looks like a Dreamsicle melted all over it. We had all the upstairs lights on so that we could see to do the work and yes, it was that cold!
The rest of the board and batten journey will be in the next post...just too much to tell. :-)

Your house looks immaculate! I know carpets are out of fashion nowadays but I actually like them.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! We have no kids living at home so it's easy to keep everything picked up and out of the way. I don't mind carpet in the bedrooms, but in this particular area, it needs hardwood floors. It is just so dark, like a cave...LOL Have a great one!
DeleteBenita, I think your home looks very cozy. You made a good choice in that sofa and using the poofs is smart too. I wouldn't worry about a coffee table, for all the reasons you state. The board and batten is a great way to make plain look smart. Sounds like you've got a story to tell on this project.....
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Rita! I cannot wait to get finished with this area, it is driving me crazy…LOL And yes, there is a story that is still ongoing. It has not been a fun project, that’s for sure! Love and hugs!
DeleteGood Morning Benita. I am going to love the board and batten. It will really finish the walls nicely. I like the choice of sofa and the poofs are great for an end table/extra seating if need be. Looking good. Can't wait to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Kris
Thank you so much! I love board and batten also and cannot wait to finish this project. It has been a nightmare! The board and batten, to me, is decoration in itself, so I won't need some of the furniture I had up here and won't have to worry about too much on those walls...just looking forward to getting it completed and getting the new floors installed! Love and hugs!
DeleteBenita, you are a fabulous decorator and upstairs or down the house is amazing. I can't wait to see how the board and batten looks finished, but I already know it will be fabulous.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Kim, you are too sweet! I can't wait to see how it all falls into place either...we have run into some issues and it has turned into a nightmare of sorts. Also can't wait to get the new flooring installed! Love and hugs!
DeleteI love the whites and fresh look. My house is so drab. We still have 1970s paneling in the den and kitchen and I hate it. I cant wait for something new one day.

Thank you so much Lisa! You know you can paint that stuff, right?! 😉 My dad always kept our house dark (heating and cooling to him) and wouldn’t let us put any color on the walls…it was like a cave…so I totally know what you mean! To this day, I refuse to have curtains or drapes if there are blinds on the windows. Our bedroom has drop cloth curtains, but they only cover one side of each window and there are no blinds. And even though we have blinds on some of the other windows, they stay open all the time. I just have to have light. 😊 Hugs!
DeleteYour home is lovely, Benita - and you need a 'dark' space to watch tv properly anyway!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Debbie! And yes, you are so right. This room is perfect for it...it is dark and the sound bar is 3 feet away...feels like a tight-knit movie theater...LOL Love and hugs!
DeleteDebbie is right. If that room is used for tv watching primarily no windows can be a blessing. It looks like that space may be used by just the two of you, correct? If so, I wouldn’t worry too much about a cocktail table. You have tables on the ends of the sofa which can accommodate whatever you need to place on them if it’s just the two of you.
ReplyDeleteThe sofa fits theee very nicely. It can be challenging to find something to fit a specific space that’s also comfy. I swear sometimes when we are picking something out for the house I can’t help but think it takes longer to decide on that then picking out the house itself! 🙄
Thank you so much! And yes, the room is just where the two of us hang out. When we have company, we are always downstairs and only the visiting kiddos come up to watch TV. It was so frustrating trying to pick out a sofa for this space...I can squeeze onto the head of a pin if I need to, but the hubster, not so much. :-) Oh honey, I couldn't agree more!! Love and hugs!
DeleteI like what I see .. I am curious about the vintage door.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Carla! That poor door…it had 47 coats of white paint, at least…lol….4 coats of blue (probably lead paint) and 4 coats of brown (probably lead paint) and then 2 coats of off-white (probably lead paint). I sanded for 5 straight days (well ventilated) just to get it to where it is. That off-white color will not come off. I wanted it down to bare wood so that I could use linseed oil on it. It was all a no-go and I just had to leave it where it is. I do hate they chopped a corner off to get it to fit. And, after all of that, I pay end up painting it gray once we get the new flooring installed. That door was a laborious project! Love and hugs!
DeleteLove this sneak peak! I think you've done a great job with what you have to work with. Angled ceilings are hard! Looks cozy for conversations and spacious at the same time. Two thumbs up!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Cindy! It is a frustrating space, that's for sure. It is cozy, that's for sure, but it works for just the 2 of us. When we eventually sell, it will be a great place for kids to hang out. Thank you again! Hugs!
DeleteSo many projects...so much fun:) Your house is looking amazing!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Cheri! There are definitely a lot of projects, but we love it! :-) Hugs!
DeleteYou're home is coming along nicely!
