On The First Day of Christmas...

During each holiday season we hear "The 12 Days of Christmas" over and over.  We absent-mindedly hum this song while baking cookies, running errands, or working on craft projects...it is a staple of Christmas.

In the past, I have researched to find out what the actual cost of the 12 Days would be...it is staggering!  But I've never researched what this song actually meant.

"On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...a partridge in a pear tree."

It is rumored that this song was not written just as a Christmas carol, but it was written as a code and message for Catholic youth.  The Catholics of the time were not allowed to practice their faith openly in England, so this song was a way to get the message of Christ out to Catholics.

The "true love" was not a lover, but actually God and his gift was Jesus, the partridge.  Partridges are known for sacrificing their life...which is what Jesus was sent to do for us.  Thus, on the first day of Christmas, December 25th, we were sent a Savior.

It's an interesting little story so I hope you will hang with me over the next few days to read about it!  I've got some recipes, home decor and maybe another craft project to share as well!

Happy 2nd Day of Christmas!

    1. After reading the entire article, I had a completely different view of this song. It has never really been one of my favorites because it always seemed so “busy”. But now, with the new information, I see it a little differently. Thank you so much…we are safe…more storms passed through today, but thankfully no tornadoes struck! Hope your week is off to a great start! Love and hugs to you!!

  9. I will never hear this song again without being reminded that the ability to practice one's religion should not be taken for granted. Thanks for sharing this with us.
