We love this dish. I don't know how often it is served above the Mason-Dixon line, but down south, it is widely served during the summer months. I wanted to make this recipe to "get in the mood" for our upcoming trip to the New England area.
On the internet, you will find a variety of ways to serve this dish. The funniest one I found was this..... "Po' folks serve it on a piece o' plywood propped on (pronounced "own" here in the south) two sawhorses, with one hole cut out for trash. Iffn' you be rich, you gots two holes cut in th' plywood." Serving it traditionally, you will roll out enough butcher paper or newspaper to cover an entire table, drain the water out of the pot and dump the entire lot on the table. I was snobby in the serving department; we ate off of a plate. :-)
If you've never cooked this dish, please give it a try. It is so easy and so yummy! Here's the recipe I have used for years from allrecipes.com.
Low Country Boil (Frogmore Stew)
3 quarts of water
1 package of Zatarain's Crab Boil
1 pound new red potatoes, halvedBring water and crab boil seasoning to a boil. Add corn and potatoes. Cook until tender. Add sausage and stir. Cook for approximately 5 minutes. Add shrimp and stir. Cook until pink, about 5 minutes. Drain immediately and serve. Yield: 6 servings (double or triple the recipe if you are serving more people). Serve with french bread and beer!
NOTE: I adjusted the original recipe for us. If you click on the allrecipes.com link, you will find the original recipe. If you want the shorter version, click here. The potatoes, sausage, corn and shrimp can be adjusted to the amount you would like. If you add more of the good stuff, use more crab boil seasoning.
I served the Low Country Boil with garlic bread and some yummy green beans. I will give you the green been recipe tomorrow!

I have had this before and it's WONDERFUL !!!!!! We wait till August so we can have fresh corn and baby red potatoes . Darn girl, you made me hungry again and it's still breakfast !! DeleteFirst Frog more is real town in SC. We always used a big kettle over s fire in the yard. Had the plywood on saw horses.

DeleteI didn't know that this was also Frogmore Stew! My daughter did this for a birthday party for me out in our picnic shelter. It was so much fun. I must dig out those old pictures!
ReplyDeleteDewena, I didn’t either until I was looking for a recipe all those years ago. I thought it was very interesting that it was called Frogmore Stew. Outside is truly the best way to prepare and serve this meal. It makes it a lot more fun!
DeleteBelieve it or not I first made this in January for my birthday a few years ago and it has become a tradition every year. We throw it all on my dining room table with a plastic table cloth and lots of newspapers. I just love it. We invested in a large boiler/fryer and it has been so worth it.

ReplyDeleteI wasn’t sure if Low Country Boil was served up north or not. Since we have been up here, all I’ve heard talk about are clambakes, which we do not seem to have a lot of in the south. LOL@ not finding Crab Boil! I was completely shocked when I popped into a grocery store up here in Newport to pick up a few things and found grits! They were on the very bottom shelf…LOL I’m also learning about the differences in Clam Chowder…wait, I didn’t say it right…Clam Chowda..…LOL (but add 12 syllables because I’m from the south and a y’all on the end..LOL)

Thank you so much! We stopped at Mystic Port on the way up here!! What a cool little town it was. We stopped for a restroom break and to stretch our legs. We’ve been hearing about all the different kinds of Clam “Chowdah” while we’ve been up here. Newport says theirs is the best and they will not serve the “stuff” you get in Maine…LOL. Hugs!!

ReplyDeleteHi Amanda, thank you so much for stopping over. Crab boil is made by Old Bay or Zatarain’s. It is a spice mixture that has a very spicy Cajun-style flavor for seafood. I’m not sure what the blend is since I always buy it rather than make it. If they don’t sell it there in Greece, I’m sure you might be able to Google the blend and make it yourself.
