...to buy a plum cake;
Home again, home again, market is late.
To market, to market, to buy a plum bun;
Home again, home again, market is done.
To market, to market, to buy a plum bun;
Home again, home again, market is done.
One of the best things about summer is being able to go to the Farmer's Market. So many fresh fruits and vegetables.
When I was a little girl, we would go to my great aunt's farm to help shell peas, shuck corn and snap beans. I can't tell you how many times we would come home with purple finger tips, which would last for days because that stuff just doesn't wash off. When we would go to the Farmer's Market with my mother, we would ride home with our cheeks full of green plums. Yes, GREEN plums. Those were the best! Of course, the tummy ache that followed wasn't enjoyable, but it never deterred us from eating those plums.
While some fruits and vegetables still haven't peaked here in Tennessee, I was able to find a few goodies to bring home.
While there is not much I miss about the State of Alabama, one of the things I DO miss is Silver Queen Corn. This photo is NOT of Silver Queen Corn. Silver Queen Corn is all white!
You can buy it everywhere in the state. In Texas, not so much. They have to have it shipped in to the Farmer's Market in Dallas and rarely have it. I haven't found any here in the Nashville area, so if any of you live here and know where to find it, speak up.....NOW!
Fresh strawberries are always a must.
Sometimes you get a klinker that is a bit sour, but mostly, lush and sweet.
Plump, juicy blackberries...YUM!
There is nothing better than warm Blackberry Cobbler with Whipped Cream....well, except for warm Peach Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream!
Fresh green beans and cold, crisp green onions.
Mix up a pone of cornbread, throw on a pot of turnip greens and pair that with some crispy green onions....southern I know, but ever so good!
Well, that's about it for me! I've got to go cook up those green beans, boil some fresh corn and get the hubby to make his grandmother's wonderful cornbread! Maybe I will share the recipe for that cornbread later this week. It melts in your mouth! AND has a secret ingredient!!

Benita, if you find a place to buy the Silver Queen, please let me know! H.G. Hills used to carry it and surely closer to the Fourth it will be at the Farmer's Market, probably from Alabama! Trader Joe's for a very short time in the summer sells nonGMO corn that is wonderful. And we used to get Zellwood, FL corn here in spring.
ReplyDeleteHappy cobbler to you,
Dewena
I will most definitely do that and you let me know as well! Silver Queen Corn boiled in sugar – it is a taste of summer on the cob! When we go to my parents or my in-laws in Alabama, I will let you know and I will buy some for us! Cobbler…cannot wait to make it! :-)
DeleteWe are lucky to have a small but thriving farmer's market. it is very hard to find a parking spot on Saturday's so I try to go on other days. Strawberries and blackberries are near the end, but peaches and tomatoes are coming in along with baby squash. Beautiful photography!
ReplyDeleteThank you ma'am!! The market in Dallas was awesome, but I haven't visited the one in Nashville yet. This was a small market near the house and it was pretty crowded. When we go to Florida, we usually buy peaches from stands on the side of the road, and also near Wetumpka, AL at Durbin Farms. Peaches are some kind of good!! Tomatoes...not so much! :-)
DeleteYou'd better share that recipe, lady! lol
ReplyDeleteThis weekend I'm headed to the farmer's market ;)
xo
rue
LOL…I will! I’ve already told Edward he needs to get that cornbread made so that I can post the recipe and photos. He didn’t tell me what was in it until after I ate the first piece years ago. He knew I wouldn’t touch it if I had found out before tasting it. :-) Now I love it and prefer him to make the cornbread. YUM…let me know what you get! Don’t you just love it??!! Hugs!!
DeleteThose blackberries look delicious - my very favorite. Blackberry cobbler is to die for! Your photos are amazing and make me feel like I can pick a strawberry right out of the picture! Nothing like a summer Farmers Market!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
Thank you so much! I was afraid I wasn’t going to get the food set up in time to take the pics. The weather has been dreary and good natural lighting is spotty, at best. I love blackberries also. We used to eat them right off the bush when I was little. I couldn’t agree more on the Blackberry Cobbler!! You have a great week also!!
DeleteWe're still waiting for the farmer's markets to fill out with ripe color. I can't wait!!
ReplyDeleteI thought this one would never have some good produce. I still can't find good cucumbers for my pickle recipe, but I keep looking every week!
DeleteBenita,
ReplyDeleteSilver Queen Corn is my favorite! The only corn I eat. My uncles in Alabama still grow it, and they all know how much I love it. Whenever I'm in town in the summer, they bring fresh ears over to my mother's house. One of my uncles also helps my mom freeze packets. Just today I went to a local farmer's market and bought Parker County Texas peaches and fresh purple hull peas, the first for this summer. One of my annual summer rituals is to cook peas, cornbread, and eat them with fresh sliced peaches... tomorrow's lunch.
Judith
Oh, Judith that sounds delicious!!! Peas, cornbread and peaches!! That is awesome that you get the corn from your family. It is the most wonderfully flavored corn but very difficult to find if you are not in the south. I can't wait to get some this year. May have to take a trip over the border to buy some in Huntsville! :-)
DeleteI can't believe how far you are ahead of us in fresh produce Benita, me being in Ohio. I go to a little Amish market on a back road called Blessed Acre's. We bought fresh asparagus (2.50 a bundle) , huge strawberries (4.00qt) and pickled beet's(2.50 a jar). I hit her up several time's a week ALL Summer long.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I remember having to clean elderberries for my mom for elderberry pie. You want to talk about staining your finger's !?!?
We still do not have as many things as I want. I want to get started on my homemade pickles, but cannot find any good cukes! I hope to get to the Nashville Farmer’s Market this weekend! I bet the Amish market is wonderful. I just love their products. The hubby loves asparagus, but not me…LOL. Elderberries?? Oh, I bet they do leave some hearty stains! LOL
DeleteIf you have a 3' space you can grow Silver Queen. Plant the seeds approximately 8" apart and fill the area. They'll be close enough for good pollination. When the corn is done you can use the stalks in autumn decorating. I buy mine at Fedco. http://www.fedcoseeds.com/seeds/?item=658
ReplyDeleteRobin, you are a sweetheart!! I appreciate that so much! Thank you, thank you!! Will be ordering some seeds to see what I can grow. Now you have read about my black thumb, right??? LOL
DeleteCan't wait for Farmer's Markets here....nothing local yet although I can go into the city public market and get imported "fresh" veggies and fruit cheaper than the grocery store. I have to wait a few more weeks for the fresh, fresh stuff!
ReplyDeleteOurs seems to be hit or miss…I’m having a hard time finding some of the non-grocery store produce, but hopefully more of it will be out before too long. Everyone has been setting up their roadside stands over the last few weeks, so I’m hopeful that okra, squash, cucumbers, etc. will be around before too long.
DeleteOur local farmer's market is itty, but if I see any SQ, I'll let you know. Your photos are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the sweet comment on my photos. I do hope the Nashville Farmer’s Market has some Silver Queen corn…I’ve had a taste for some for the longest time now. If I decide to cross the border into Alabama to get some, I will let you know and will pick up plenty for the 3 of us (me, you and Dewena). :-) Have a great day!
DeleteI'm super hungry after reading this ;)
ReplyDelete:-) We had a nice dinner that I will be posting about later this week!
DeleteI love the Farmer's market - Thanks for linking up to Pin Worthy Wednesday, I have pinned your post to the Pin Worthy Wednesday Pinterest Board.
ReplyDeleteAmber, I do also and try to go every chance I get. The produce is usually so much better than in the grocery store! Thank you so much! Have a great evening!
DeleteThank you for sharing at Share It One More Time ...how you have a great week...Tammy
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting! Hope you have one as well!
DeleteFresh from the farm produce is great! I live next to several farms and love the freshness of the strawberries, especially. Thanks for sharing at Friday Favorites! Can't wait to see what you've been up to this week. :)
ReplyDeleteI love them also! I enjoy the farms that let you come in and pick your produce straight from the farm...nothing better during the summer! Thanks so much!!
DeleteSo true about the corn, Silver Queen was always my mom and Granny's choice!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing at AMAZE ME MONDAY!
Blessings,
Cindy
It is my favorite and I hate that it is so difficult to find! Thank you so much for hosting! Have a wonderful day!
