Half-Baths Always Seem...

...to be an afterthought in a house plan.  They are usually dark and are the most lackluster room in the house...besides the laundry room.  Something always has to be done to make these little rooms look better.  We previously updated the half bath in our previous home...which you can check out here.  When we found this house, we made a "naughty or nice" list...this half bath made the list and it wasn't the "nice" list.

This is where we started...
...plain Jane all the way...or milktoast ..use whatever word you like.  I didn't have any other before photos...just didn't think...sheesh...guess I will learn one day!

And this is where we ended...
...we used the Peppercorn color again...we just love this shade of gray!  We replaced the farmhouse light fixture with one that has clear glass shades (also 3 lights instead of one) so it is pretty bright in here.  It is a tiny space, smaller than in our last house.  I can't take photos with the lights out...just too dark and this room gets zippo natural light.

We replaced the mirror...
...and added shiplap to the wall behind the commode.

We also added crown molding.  Just a side note...when I say we, I mean the hubster.  I did all the painting, he did all of the woodwork.  Oh, I did hang the mirror! :-)  And decorated!  And cleaned!

It took one weekend to give this small space some personality and to bring it in line with the rest of the house.  I love how the Peppercorn brings out the gray in the countertop.  And just so you know...unless you install the drywall yourself, you cannot get smooth walls here in Texas...it's texture all the way baby!

I wanted to give you a full-frontal pic of the vanity but I figured you didn't want to see me sitting on the commode...cuz that's the only way it was going to happen... that mirror is almost the width of the bathroom...and much like the evil eye...it sees all!

  1. Love it Benita. What a gorgeous bathroom. I love the shiplap too. I had to laugh at your comment about your "we" meaning your hubster. I always tell Terry when We comes in the beginning of the sentence it really means you lol! Have a great week.

    1. Thank you so much! I can't really get in there to get good photos...it is such a small space, so this is as good as it gets...LOL Yep, WE always means the hubster. :-) I'm not good at using power tools, but I can wield a paintbrush like nobody's business. LOL I hope you have one as well! Love and hugs to you!

  2. Wow, paint does really make a difference. I had to go back to the before picture to see if that was the same vanity. Gorgeous! You are entitled to say we...after all, you are the creative force behind projects. I shudder to think what the Urban Farmer would do on his own. Hope you week is going well and the temps are starting to drop a bit. We have had hot and muggy here and I'm kinda sick of it...

    1. It does doesn't it??!! I couldn't get over how different the vanity looked after painting the walls. And thank you so much! Yeah, you should see the garage...LOL The hubster is definitely NOT allowed to decorate the house!! :-) YES, thankfully, the temps are dipping down...into the 40s tonight...I'm so excited!!! Hot and muggy is what we had last week and it was horrible! Hope your weather changes to something better soon! Hope you are having a great week! Love and hugs to you!

    1. Thank you so much Carla! That piece is something the hubster made. He used an old guitar, worn out strings and other odd and end pieces he keeps in a large storage container in the garage. He sprayed some type of funky paint on it – when you see it up close, it isn’t smooth – and then went about assembling all of his pieces. You can’t see it in these photos, but Mr. Guitar is sporting an earring…LOL The hubster makes all kinds of cool stuff when he has time. Hope you are having a great week!

    1. Hey girl! Thank you so much! Nope, that piece is an original from the hubster. He has all sorts of art projects that he's made using bits and pieces from other stuff he has stored in the garage. I've told him he needs to try to sell some of them. He does a great job. Guess we know who has all the "craftiness" in this house, it isn't me! :-)

  6. That looks much better, Benita with what we can see from the before. The mirror alone is a great improvement, but anytime you increase lighting I am for that! I despise dim lighting (unless I can be the one in charge of choosing to dim). Love the wall trim behind the commode (and that guitar art!), and the paint too.

    1. Thanks so much Rita! Believe me, it looks tons better! I disliked the previous mirror immensely and was happy to see it go! I'm with you on dim lighting, I hate it and always make sure I can put 100 watt bulbs in every light fixture! Thanks you again so much!

  7. The new mirror really opens up the space. The original seems like it was too small for where it was. Truly turned out very pretty and much better fitting to your style.

    1. Thank you so much! And yes, it was just too small and not my style at all. There is another one in one of the upstairs bathrooms that I need to replace as well. We will get it to eventually! Thank you again so much!!

  9. Benita,
A bathroom update... love them. Seems like I'm always updating a bathroom... Yours looks great. I hear you about trying to take photos in bathrooms without being in the mirror.

    1. Thank you so much Judith! These small bathrooms are definitely a challenge to photograph and to work in. You should have seen me and the hubster trying to get the shiplap boards nailed into place…I felt like I was in a clown car! LOL Love and hugs!
