Master Bedroom Makeover - Board and Batten...

Week 3.

Progress for our Master Bedroom Makeover for the One Room Challenge has slowed down a little for us due to our workload.  We will be picking up the pace for week 4!

If you've been reading along, you know we are adding visual interest to our bedroom using a board and batten style wall treatment, along with a gray-colored paint called Peppercorn.  We have also ordered and placed our new rug and purchased the mirrors.  They are happily sitting in the floor until we finish the board and batten.
We decided on Sherwin Williams Fundamental White in an eggshell finish for the board and batten treatment.

I wanted to share a little bit of detail about our walls and how we are installing our board and batten.  Here in Texas, it is practically impossible to find a smooth wall, they are all textured, so we chose an eggshell paint for the board and batten area.

We are not installing "board" because we didn't want to remove baseboards or door frames.  We also didn't want the wood battens hanging out over the baseboards or beyond the door frames, we wanted it all to be flush, so no board for us.
For those who are unfamiliar, board is the smooth wood that is placed on the wall prior to the batten installation.  I guess I should rename this "faux board" and batten or "no board" and batten or batten only.

When we started looking at wood to use for this project, most of what we found at Lowe's and Home Depot was 1 inch thick by whatever the length size.  After some looking around, we finally found something that would work and not hang out over the baseboards.  Home Depot carries hobby wood that is 1/2" thick and 1/4" thick.  We bought a couple of pieces of each size and decided the 1/2" thick would work the best.  These are our dimensions for this project...
...it works perfectly for our space.

Another decision we made was to not paint the edges of the wood prior to installation.  We had 3 choices in regard to the edges...paint, paint and caulk or caulk only.
We chose to caulk only since that is what we did upstairs and the bare ends didn't show.  You can always choose to leave the wood bare if you like.

We also chose to not paint the walls prior to batten installation.  Since we will be using white on the walls and battens, it didn't make since to repaint the wall white.  The wall plates stay on so that the hubster knows how much to notch out of the wood.  They will be removed during the painting process.

Something we use that I couldn't even dream of doing without is a nail gun.  That piece of equipment is invaluable when you are involved with one of these projects.  I cannot imagine having to hammer 12 bazillion nails into the wall.

I would like to encourage you to visit the One Room Challenge blog to see all the progress.  For us, gray paint will start during week 4 and I hope to be ordering my wall art this weekend.  I cannot believe we are at the midpoint already!  No progress has yet been made on the chandelier...but I'm hoping...

  2. Perfect Benita....I am loving the way your room is coming along and I love your reasoning for each step. As you and I know, there is no right or wrong way to do a project these days. I can remember a time (I am dating myself here) when one did NOT put flooring over old flooring or even paint over wallpaper and now it is done all the time.

A nail gun is a necessity, for sure.

I love chandy's, but I have to admit I also like a ceiling fan here in SW Florida, but there is always hope your guy will change his mind, once the room has come together.

I am so anxious to see your finished room. It is looking good.

    1. Thank you so much Kari! I've had to make some changes because some of the things didn't work out the way I planned. Since I've been caulking and painting, I'm actually reconsidering the ceiling fan myself. It has really come in handy...LOL I'm anxious to see it also...putting that gray paint on the wall is giving me a lot of anxiety...LOL Love and hugs!!

  3. It's going to be so pretty!!!! I love everything that you've done so far. I'm with you on the nail gun. I would love to talk The Hubs into a Chandy, however he keeps the ceiling fan running even in the winter. I doubt that he will ever go for it, but stranger things have happened. Great job, I can't wait to see it when it's finished. Have a great week!

    1. Thank you so much! YES, a nail gun is a must! Edward hasn’t budged on the ceiling fan yet. I will admit that while I’ve been caulking and painting all of that board and batten, the ceiling fan has come in handy. We keep ours running all year round also…we just have to have air movement. I so want that chandy though…LOL Hugs!

  8. Like your changes. I have not jumped on the band wagon for this wall treatment. It just hasn't interested me all that much. But I do like the texture it adds.
