Master Bedroom Makeover - One Room Challenge...

Week 1.

After completing the mini-makeover in our TV sitting area, the hubster and I decided that our master bedroom needed a new personality.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with it the way it is, it's just a little on the boring side...white walls, acid-washed gray concrete floors, neutral bedding, blah, blah, blah.  Since this makeover is going to start this weekend, I decided to sign-up as a guest participant in the One Room Challenge.   For us, this will be a huge undertaking given that we have 2 weeks of back-to-back house guests and a full week that will be consumed by business meetings.  WHAT was I thinking??!!  I was thinking that we just needed to get it done (we've been talking about it for over a year) and have it completed before summer starts.

Here's the plan...

This is my current bed.  I love it!  Unfortunately, it is so neutral it needs a little something extra to showcase it's beauty.

We will be adding board and batten...we've done it once (EXACTLY 1 time) in our TV sitting area (photo below) and now we're pros...right?! :-)  Right!

We are going to paint the wall above the board and batten in our bedroom Sherwin Williams Peppercorn.  I love this color and I think it will definitely give our walls some definition.  The actual board and batten will be white...not sure what color white.  Since there are only 4 bazillion shades of white, it is going to take a little time to figure it out.

I want to remove the ceiling fan and install a light similar to this...

...wish me luck on getting the hubster to get rid of that fan!

A new rug and mirrors over the night tables are on the agenda as well.  I love our lamps and night tables, so those will be staying.

The mirror between the windows will stay, because I love it...

...but I need to figure out new wall art.  I like these...

The bedding has me stumped.  I love what I have.  I will leave it until the very end to see if the Peppercorn brings out the gray print in the bedding.  If it does, it stays.  If not, back to the drawing board!

Stay tuned...these posts are weekly on Thursdays (yes, I'm late)...c'est la vie!

  1. I love the grays and whites so much! My bedroom is mixed furniture, dirty white carpet and ugly bedding. I cant get the hubby to update anything! I can't just tackle it myself without him getting mad. He refuses to put any money in our home because he wants to move. He has said that now for 5 years. He thinks it's all fine as it is. He said no one sees our room anyway. Blaaah!

    1. Thank you so much, I love the grays/whites also. They work downstairs with the concrete floors but not so much upstairs. Bless your heart! I hate that you are unable to update anything. Not even paint? Paint is an inexpensive fix. I suppose you could go out and find a new house and tell him it is time to move. :-) I am thankful that Edward is on board with updating things...well, most things anyway. He does draw some lines sometimes...says it is just not worth putting the money in. We do inexpensive small projects that we can do ourselves...all except the flooring we just had installed. The carpet was rough after 2 years and the new flooring will help resale value when it is time to move again. Hugs!

  3. You haven’t asked for opinions but since when does that stop me? lol

I think we have similar tastes and style so I’m going to assume my ideas might help. I think peppercorn will look amazing and do so much to warm up the room and highlight your goegeous bed. Since you love the bed, that tells me you have a bit of a romantic in you and want your home, or at least your bedroom, to reflect that. Correcto mundo?

That’s what I thought. Sooooo, since I’m the same way here’s what I would do if it were my bedroom: consider adding a bench at the end of the bed. You might feel it will cover it up but it won’t. Something low and airy would be perfect. There are so many gorgeous ones out there and they add interest and function (a place to put your pillows at night for starters. It looks like right now you need to place them on the chairs? Not a big deal but when you come home after a rousing night out a with a few dirty martinis under your belt, the last thing you need is to walk allllll across the room. Amiright?).

New bedding would be nice but in my not so humble opinion not necessary. . What you have is lovely. New contrasting pillows and a patterned throw will do the trick.

Consider a piece of art above the bed. The prints would look quite nice!

The mirror between your chairs is gorgeous. Can you get another one? If so, put them above your nightstands and put a piece of art (the prints you picked, once again, are great) where the mirror is now. If you add two mirrors in addition to the existing one that might be a bit much and dilute the importance and impact of each mirror.

I adore stained concrete floors, but unless you’re going for a modern look and feel, they can benefit from a rug, especially in a bedroom. It will also help ground the space which you may want even more after you paint.

The chandelier you’re considering is beautiful! I saw one today that is drop dead gorgeous and I asked the salesperson if it’s something that can be ordered in the future because like you, we currently have a fan, and we need to live in the space for a summer before knowing if we need the fan. I hope not!

So that’s my two cents. Good luck with the makeover!

    1. Honey, you know I do not mind opinions at all! I think two female brains (or several for that matter) are much better than one! I always ask Edward's thoughts and he usually says "it'll look fine to me"...LOL

Yes, correctamundo on the bedroom. The rest of the house is functional and sort of minimal but I want the bedroom to be warm and inviting for us. It has been plain and it is way past time to do something special with it. I love the Peppercorn and have used it in several rooms now and think it is a great color. I agree with you on the warming up the space nicely.

LOL...you are so right about the pillows. They have to get stacked in the chairs and I walk off a pound a day moving those pillows from bed to chair to bed again! I'm going to look around this coming week for benches. We discussed it and if I can find the right one, I think it will be perfect. I originally had one in there but carried it back because it didn't look right with the bed. I put it on the back burner until we got ready to redo the bedroom, so I will once again be on the lookout for one. I love tufted benches and think one with some contrasting color would work.

I already have frames purchased for artwork above the bed. I love the prints I found online and if I can order the prints and use my frames, then I'm set with art above the bed. I fell in love with the frames when I saw them, so I hope they will work.

Unfortunately, I can't get that mirror. Edward is not totally sold on the mirrors over our night tables, so they may be a "no go" anyway. Like you, I don't want it to be too much in there. It is not a large bedroom.

My rug is already here being flattened...lol I can't wait to get it into the bedroom. The rug I had there I moved into my office the other day. We have to have rugs on these concrete floors for sound muffling and to add warmth. When I ordered the rug for the bedroom, I ordered one for my dining table to warm up that space also.

Edward has conditions about the fan/chandelier swap...LOL We need some circulation in there because it does get hot here in the summer, so if the fan goes and the chandelier comes in, I have to explain to him my plan for air circulation at night...LOL

Thank you so much for your sweet compliments on my choices and all of your suggestions and encouragement. You and I clearly have the same taste and thought processes...man, that's dangerous...LOL!! Love and hugs!!

  4. Benita, my dad painted his built-ins Peppercorn and it's a deep, rich, beautiful color! I wouldn't buy one thing until that part is done so you can get a feel for the color. It will definitely make your beautiful bed show up more. I don't see anything that you need to change. It's all gorgeous.

    1. Thank you so much Stacey! The board/batten and paint will be our first steps (outside of my rug, which I ordered and it arrived 2 days later…LOL) Like you, I want to get a feel for the room once that paint is on the wall, because it could totally change everything I’ve planned. We love the Peppercorn color and have used it in 2 houses now. It does have a deep rich color and just adds so much warmth without being overwhelming. Thank you again! Love and hugs!

  5. Love your choices! Good luck with getting rid of the ceiling fan. Fellas seem to like to be blasted by air rotating at a hundred miles an hour while they sleep. Enjoy your weekend...xoxo

    1. Thank you so much Donna! I didn't tell Edward I wanted to get rid of the fan, he read it on the blog...LOL He is not convinced it is a good idea and said that if he agreed, I better have a great alternate solution...LOL I've got to figure it out. And you are so right...I can do without it for the most part, but not him...LOL Have a great weekend! Love and hugs!

  6. How about adding a blanket or quilt or something to the end of the bed? Would break up the neutral.

    1. Brenda, that is a good idea and yes, it would definitely break up the neutral colors of the bed and bring out the grays that don’t show up. I will be on the lookout for one. Thank you so much! Love and hugs!

  7. Your bedroom is lovely as is. But I understand the need to change. I have the same issue with a ceiling fan, living in Florida the ceiling fan runs constantly on low. The captain loves it. I have a chandelier in my closet and a chandelier to hang over my soaking tub. It has not been hung yet. LOL. I can’t wait to see the results of your makeover. With your talents, I know it will look gorgeous. Hugs sweet friend.

    1. Thank you so much Kari! I think the changes will warm it up a bit. The concrete floors are such a cold, hard surface that they just need something else with them. I want to hang a chandelier over the tub also...will throw that at him another day...LOL We don't have any chandeliers and I think a woman should definitely have one in the bedroom...LOL Have a great weekend! Love and hugs!

    1. Thank you so much Kim! See, that's we we think...after one room, everyone is an expert at something...you learn while you are doing it and hopefully learn from our mistakes...LOL And we made lots of those! Thank you so much, we are looking forward to it also. I'm just ready to start and get finished. I can't function in chaos, especially a mess in the bedroom. I may have to sleep in a guest bedroom until ours is finished. Love and hugs!

  11. I love the gray and whites together and cannot wait to see you remake this room. The board and batten is going to really look nice. I am in the process of trying to find new bedding for summer for my room. I want to do up some changes in there.
    Happy Weekend.

    1. Thank you so much Kris! I love the gray/white palette that is throughout the downstairs of our home, but do like giving it a punch when it gets too boring...like our bedroom. I can't wait to get started on the board and batten and am looking forward to getting some color on the walls. Bedding is so hard to find...I'm very particular about the look of it and I struggle constantly! Can't wait to see your changes as well! Love and hugs sweet friend! Hope you are having a great weekend!

    1. Thank you so much Carla. Those “small” things make a huge difference though. They can totally transform the look of a room! I’m ready to dig in on this one and get it finished. We are also going to raise the mattress/box springs set on the bed to make it higher..we’ll see how that goes…LOL Love and hugs!
