Week 4.
Even though I'm on a short blogging break to take care of some personal business, I had already written this post...why not share it. :-)
So here I am in week 4 of the One Room Challenge. While I'm not too far behind, I still feel immense pressure to get this bedroom wrapped up.
Nothing interesting to share as I am in the caulking and painting phase of this Master Bedroom Makeover. Caulking takes forever...fffooorrrreeeevvvveeeerrr. And, it's a dangerous job, especially when you have textured walls. While they make handy dandy little tools to help smooth the line of caulk, nothing works better than your finger.
And after about 5 times of dragging your finger over "knock-down" wall texture, it hurts a bit (and totally ruins your nails). After about 50 times of doing this, you sort of start bleeding into the caulk. Thank goodness for paint, right?! ;-)
As I explained in my Week 1 post, I am using Peppercorn for the dark gray above the board and batten and I chose Fundamental White for the board and batten area. Both of these are Sherwin Williams paint colors purchased at Lowes. We bought Valspar paint in eggshell finish. I felt the eggshell would help tone down the texture. Unlike painting smooth walls, painting textured walls can be a bit challenging and they always seem to take two coats of paint, sometimes more, regardless of the quality of the paint. The paint seems to separate and bleed away in between the texture. It doesn't matter how much paint you have on your roller or brush, it just separates on the texture and leaves unpainted areas. I suppose it is the nature of the beast.
Since you can never get a really smooth cut with textured walls, I had been having a lot of anxiety about cutting in around the crown molding with such a dark colored paint. I don't have the color of the white paint to touch up and I'm not ready to repaint all of that molding. When I cut in, I kept a steady head and a steady hand and it seemed to work okay. I didn't let my brush dry out, but kept it wet, not letting the paint glob on the brush. I put on a light coat around the crown molding.
I've always found that 2 light coats of paint cover much better than one heavy coat. Heavy coats promote runs and accidents. I also kept my roller wet and used slow and steady strokes...dry rollers cause paint splatter. While the home decor/improvement shows tell you to start with a large "W" on your wall, you have to follow up with the rest of the alphabet when painting textured walls. You have to go in 45 different directions in order to cover that texture. I really do love the clean, crisp look so far. The Peppercorn is warming up the space and looks beautiful with the rug.
Please don't mind those smudges of orange...I dropped a Cheeto in the paint and we all know what happens with Cheeto dust! ;-) Or am I the only one who snacks while painting??!

Loving these colors, ❤️
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! We are too and I can't wait to show you guys! Hugs!
DeleteI guess you can literally say you put your blood and sweat into this project.
ReplyDeleteUse a small sponge on the caulk! Save those nails and fingers!!
Lisa
Literally! LOL I tried one of those little tools and hated it! I just let the nails go and got them redone after all that caulk…which went on for days and days…LOL Hugs !!
DeleteLooking great!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Penny! Have a great day! Hugs!
DeleteLove these colors. The board and batten looks great with the darker color. It all pops. It is coming together nicely.
ReplyDeleteBig Hugs as life takes you over for a short while. Keeping good thoughts.
Hugs,
Kris
Thank you so much Kris! We are loving it already, it is truly amazing how big of a difference the Peppercorn paint and board and batten made. And the light fixture...totally changed the look of the room. Thank you...things are still tooling along...hope things are going well there! Love and hugs!
DeleteBeautiful Benita, I love the contrast and can't wait for the room to be finished. You will make it on time...I have faith in you and you are strong! You are almost to the finish line my sweet friend. And it is gonna be great! Hugs and love
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! We love the contrast also…and it is stark! 😊 I’m hanging on for the finish line…and then I will collapse…LOL Love and hugs!
DeleteLooking good, Benita.
ReplyDeleteJudith
Thank you so much Judith! I appreciate it! Have a great day! Love and Hugs!
DeleteI admire you....I absolutely hate to paint and when I do undertake it (no matter what I paint) it comes out looking much less than perfect!!! Yours though looks like it was painted by a pro!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I don’t love to paint, but when it needs to be done, I would rather be the one to do it. My OCD kicks in and while it is a slow process, it usually turns out pretty decent! 😊 Hugs!
DeleteThis looks totally fabulous! Sorry about your fingers :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Jenna! It was annoying, but thankfully, it's over...LOL Hugs!
DeleteI do like the colours, and yes I think two light coats of paint cover much better than one heavy one.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy these last days of April, this month has simply whizzed by!
All the best Jan
Thank you so much Jan! We are loving it so far! I know, I can't believe how quickly the month has disappeared! Hugs!
DeleteI like the colors. When doing paint projects, I agree with your advice. I have made the mistake of the one heavy coat.
ReplyDeleteCheetos while painting.. perfect ;-)
Carla
Thank you so much Carla. We love the colors also…crisp and clean. The light coats are much easier to work with even though I want to put on heavy coats to get it over with. It’s always a mistake when I rush it. 😊 I love Cheetos…LOL Love and hugs!
DeleteLOVE!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Jenna! Hugs!
DeleteI must admit that Cheeto dust is new to me. But we learn something new every day.

Honey, you are missing out on Cheetos...LOL I could eat bags of them and have orange-stained fingers forever...LOL Love and hugs!
