Life Hacks #16...

I don't know how your summer has been but ours has been crazy!  Lots of travel this year...Florida, California, Idaho, Oregon, Alaska...upcoming...Washington (the state and DC), San Francisco, Nevada...whew!  In the midst of that, we moved my youngest son from Florida back to Texas during one of our visits and we have some other family obligations that will be taking place during the fall and winter.

I've also got an arm injury I've been nursing.  I went to bed one night and got up the next morning experiencing lots of pain and was unable to raise my arm above my head.  Do you know how difficult it is to blow-dry your hair with one arm??!!   I often wonder how these things happen.  I usually attribute it to one of 2 things...either I'm a secret Ninja warrior while my normal self is asleep and I get injured in battle OR the aliens come by occasionally to conduct tests on my aging body - you know, trying to discover the secrets to menopause!

Even though I have not been present in my posting or working on projects, I have been keeping up with my research on those life hacks!  Priorities, right?

I don't know how it is where you live, but we have mosquitoes the size of small bats down here in Texas, especially when we've had a wet spring season.
If you get bitten, hit that bite with a glue stick.  Yes, a glue stick!  The itch will go away within 15 minutes and will not return.  It works!

We all have a propensity for gossip.  So it makes sense that if you want someone to really listen to what you are about to say, start your conversation with "I shouldn't be telling you this, but..."
The person will think you are about to share some sordid secret and really listen to what you have to say.

If a bee or wasp lands on you, blow it off instead of swatting it.
It won't feel threatened and won't sting you.

Take Vitamin B complex during the summer.
Insects don't like the way it makes you smell, thus warding off mosquitoes and biting flies.

Oil stains in your driveway?  Pour lukewarm cola on each stain and let it sit overnight.
In the morning, wipe away the excess liquid and the stain should be gone.

Stay cool folks!  We are having triple digit temps for the next week...UGH!  Which reminds me of a quote from Walter Winchell..."It's a sure sign of summer if the chair gets up when you do."

  1. Loving your life hacks. I knew about the coke but I have to say I needed to know about the glue stick yesterday when I got bit walking to the car, not once, not twice but three times and the last on a toe! I had read earlier in the yr to put toothpaste on a bite, well unless you are suppose to use a certain flavor, it don't work! We might not have as big a ones as Texas does (don't you guys do everything BIG?), but living with the creek right beside the driveway makes for a LOT of them, big, small and somewhere in between. Enjoyed your blog.

    1. Thank you, I'm glad you enjoy them! I love finding out about new stuff and am always running across something! OUCH!! 3 bites...not a good thing. The glue stick definitely works! We were sitting out with friends a week ago and she was bitten several times. We used glue on all the bites and she said they never itched and it immediately reduced the size of the bit. I suppose the glue counteracts the histamine or something. And yes, everything is always bigger in Texas...LOL Thank you so much! Hugs!

  2. Always love these life hacks. Good idea about blowing on a stinging bug rather than swatting it away. Have a great day today. Wishing you safe travels.

    1. Isn’t it the truth about the chair, though? They totally stick to you in this heat! LOL I haven’t been to Wisconsin, but the hubster has. We recently had some friend visit from Wisconsin, a few weeks ago. We are hoping to get up to see them sometime this fall! Looking forward to the visit! 😊 You are very welcome! Love and hugs!

  8. These are some interesting hacks. You are right about the gossip. We have mosquitos here in NC but they must not like how I smell. They will pester me but I never get bit. Same with fleas. Nothing bites me. My daughter on the other hand will swell in whelps the size of baseballs with a mosquito bite and they love her. I have to tell her about the glue stick.

    1. The gossip statement does work…people think they are going to miss something if they don’t listen…LOL The hubster and I both get bitten frequently. I hate the things and we spray with all types of spray and still get bitten. I whelp pretty badly and love that the glue stick immediately calms the bite. Thanks so much! Hugs!

  9. Great advice! Any mosquito advise is appreciate. I'm done with travelling for the season, it is mostly work now, and when I have the time, staying home with the AC is the most appealing option. It is hot out there. And humid. So I'm getting a lot of little things done around the house, sorting out and cleaning and crafting. Not sexy but I'm enjoying myself.

    1. I'm right there with you on the mosquitoes! I hate the things and am always a feast for them...LOL Our trips are primarily business but we get to see different places that we wouldn't otherwise travel to. The heat and humidity here are awful, so traveling to cooler climates is always welcome. I think getting tasks accomplished around the house is a great thing. I'm on another "cleaning out" spree...LOL Love and hugs!

  10. Benita, honey, I shouldn't be telling you this but mosquitoes rarely bite me anymore and now I'm guessing it's because I've been on a super B vitamin prescription for a few years. Wow, I guess it's worth that $90 cost!

Your poor arm! Have you seen a doctor about it? Maybe need PT? Does it help sleeping with that arm resting on a pillow? Of course the logical explanation is that an alien is doing experiments on you while you sleep.

Are you ever home? That sounds like a whole lot of traveling going on, girl!

    1. That is awesome! The Vitamin B does work then!! I’m going to start and make Edward start also. He gets bitten much more than me. Does the vitamin B make you feel more energetic?

I haven’t seen a doctor yet but have been giving myself PT by lifting low pound weights and doing Yoga. It has helped a little. Just a bizarre thing…I told Edward that I don’t like this getting old deal where you go to bed fine and get up the next morning with something wrong. I mean, it worked yesterday, why isn’t it working today?? LOL And yes, I’m going with the alien theory…LOL

      Love and hugs sweet friend!
