Paint Stick Beach-Style Flag...

I'm always looking for projects to make to give as gifts to friends and family.  I found this cute project on Pinterest and decided to re-create it for my in-law's lake house.  I loved the "beachy" look of this little flag!

This was a simple project that required 1 purchase...the small starfish.  I got them deeply discounted at Hobby Lobby.

The paint sticks I got for free at Walmart.  I had all of the other supplies at home. Win-Win! :-)

Prior to jumping in, I laid out my paint sticks to see how large I wanted the flag to be.  I used seven total.  I used several different shades of blue and green to achieve my beach colors.

I alternated the paint colors, adjusting the color by adding white or a darker shade of blue.

After the paint dried, I laid out my color pattern and hot-glued the sticks together.

For added support, I used craft sticks sticks across the back.

After the glue was solid, I used a small bit of hot-glue to place the starfish.
I used different sizes for a bit of visual interest.

I also added some jute string for a hanger.

Cute, easy project that didn't require a lot of time!  The paint and glue dried quickly.  I spent most of my OCD time trying to place the starfish.

I'm happy to report that no fingers were sacrificed during the use of hot glue in the making of this project. :-)

  1. OK now, this is adorable. This would be a fun project for kids to do when a new home is painted. They can paint each stick the colors of a room and would be a great memory flag later. I love your nautical themed crafts. This flag would look awesome in a beach or lake house. Your in laws are gonna be so happy.

  10. You continue to amaze me with your talents:) This is such a cute idea and you executed it so well. You and my 13-yr. old granddaughter would have so much fun together. Like you, she is always coming up with some creative project. She amazes me! In fact, when she was about 4 or 5 she went out in the yard, gathered up 3 unopened pine cones, and then made "clothes" for them! Next, she put on a puppet show with them as the father, mother, & child. So cute!!! I think being so creative and imaginative is a God-given talent and the two of you must have pushed me out of line when God was handing those out:)
