...isn't that the way all great stories start??! :-) At least it's nicer than the redneck version..."hey y'all, lookit this"!
So, back to it. It started with a wall...a stark blank wall!
No, no, this is not the stark blank wall, this is "fluff"! The new blog layout won't let me choose the photo that I want to be attached as the one "representin'" for the post, so it automatically chooses the first photo I place in the post. Since I don't want an ugly photo starting out and I want you to see the finished product later, I have to use something pretty at the beginning of the post. Apple pie with whipped cream and nutmeg is pretty, right?!?
When we purchased our home, it had all white walls, which was a great contrast to the gray concrete floors.
Unfortunately, that wall is what you see regardless of how you enter the house...and it was BORING!
I wasn't sure how I wanted this wall to look, so until I could make a decision I hung a small shelf, a sign and added some things off the hooks.
And while I think Jip IS a good name for a puppy, this is not what I really wanted hanging here, but it worked at the time. Unfortunately, that too small shelf stayed on the wall for a year...that's how long it took for me to decide what I wanted to do.
I discussed the plans with the hubster and we set to work. One of the decisions we had to make was whether or not we wanted the changes to carry to the other side of the half bath where there is a small portion of wall before you enter the laundry room. We decided to carry it over.
The hubster marked off the studs prior to cutting the first board. While he measured and cut, I painted. Now, I want you to know that I offered to measure and cut. But, for some reason, men don't understand this measurement..."it is 6 feet and 3 little line marks past that long line between 6 feet and 7 feet...no, not that one...the one closer to the 7". I mean, that's accurate enough, right??!! Additionally, I clearly know nothing about saws per our conversation the other day regarding my need to cut a piece of wood...

I mean, that's accurate enough, right??!! Additionally, I clearly know nothing about saws per our conversation the other day regarding my need to cut a piece of wood...
Me: Is the table saw ready to use? The blade straight up and down? I need to cut my board in half for photos.
Hubster: We don't have a table saw, I will have to use the circular saw when I get home.
Me: I thought it was a table saw since you sit it on a table.
The hubster then proceeded to explain the difference between a circular saw and a table saw. To me, they both have blades and cut things. Needless to say, I'm not allowed to ever go near the saw...or a measuring tape.
Once we settled into our job assignments, the task went easily enough. The hubster did an awesome job!
The best part is that we no longer have a boring wall when you walk into our home. It's a huge pop of color and it really warms up the room.
While this project was waaaaayyyyy off the KDS, it was so worth stepping out of my comfort zone. All in all, a successful DIY project. Good thing the hubster knows about using saws...I would probably be missing some fingers and a few toes! And I won't even bother to tell you what happened when I tried to use the nail gun...at least it didn't require a trip to the ER...the hubster had on shoes...and...I'm never allowed to use the nail gun again!

That accent wall looks amazing! Isn't it funny how we all love wooden wall treatments so much now that rooms seem incomplete without them. I love what you did here!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I agree! I love wooden wall treatments, they just add an extra dimension to the room! Just about every room in this house had shiplap on at least one wall. It just looked strange not having anything on this wall. And incomplete is the perfect word! Love and hugs!
DeleteWhat a smart idea and you've done a phenomenal job Benita! It looks amazing. :) I'd love to find a place to do this in our home. Love it!
ReplyDeleteCindy, thank you so much! We were really pleased with how it turned out...the hubster does a great job with stuff like this. Me, not to much! :-) I would hate to see how those boards would have looked if it had been left up to me to get them on the wall...LOL Love and hugs!
DeleteThat wall makes a huge difference! I was laughing all through this post because it is exactly the same way at our house! Once we did a gallery wall where we hung several pictures. I showed my hubby what I wanted and he did all of the measuring. Here is a link to the post if you want to see it. https://www.enjoyingthesimplethings.com/birds-of-featherlook-great-on-wa/
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! It did make a difference. It’s always crazy when we are trying to work on projects. I do the same thing…tell him what I want and let him figure out how to make it happen. I have found that it runs much smoother when I remove myself from the equation. Love that gallery wall! Happy Thanksgiving! Love and hugs!
DeleteI'm afraid of both saws and nail guns!! Great job, this looks amazing, really warms up that wall!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Yeah, neither of those weapons are my favorites either. I told a friend of mine this morning that when I go to get my nails done, I prefer to get 10 nails painted rather than 8 or less...LOL Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!
DeleteBenita,
ReplyDeleteThe new accent wall looks great. I like that you continued it to the other side of the bathroom door. Love the hooks, and oh, the new sign!
Judith
Thank you so much Judith! We thought it looked better by continuing on the other side of the bathroom door, rather than just doing that one small portion. Thank you again and Happy Thanksgiving!
DeleteBenita,
ReplyDeleteWhat app do you use for your Instagram photos at the bottom of your blog?
Judith
Judith, the Instagram feed came with my template. I know that it had to go in with HTML code that they gave me instructions for. I don't know if it is something that can be added to all templates or if the template has to be designed for it. Thanks so much!
DeleteThat really looks super fine, and across the doorway was a smart approach. That look is an answer to a feminine/masculine mix mastery in my opinion, which I love in home decor.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Rita! It definitely balances out all of the white in the living area and kitchen. We needed something to break it all up and this color worked well. Love and hugs! Have a great Thanksgiving!
DeleteLove this so much Benita. Awesome job. Shiplap or any kind of wood on walls is the best. Amazing how a few cuts of wood and then painted on a wall can look so great. Good job. Terry won't let me touch his tools either!!!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Kris
Thank you so much Kris! I think wood is so great at adding some depth and dimension to a room...also added some much needed warmth to ours. While I love the concrete floors, you have to do extra work to warm up a room. :-) Love and hugs and Happy Thanksgiving!
DeleteWow, what a difference! LOVE all the hooks to hang things. You are so blessed to have a DIY hubster...just sayin'
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Those are my Hobby Lobby finds. I cleaned out 2 stores for those hooks…LOL. I am truly blessed…he is such a great guy to do these crazy things for me! Love and hugs and Happy Thanksgiving!!
DeleteIt looks great! I also liked the first version. I don't use sharp objects. I'm still using steak knives I've had for 40 years, although I have a perfectly nice set of various type knives I never touch.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Thank you so much Brenda! I try to stay away from them also! I had my old ones for quite a while also and then we got a new set when we got married 10 years ago. I like the old ones! Love and hugs and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
DeleteLOL! love this confessional. it rings true for me too.
ReplyDeleteand I love the wall.
with the pegs... it's starting to have that Shaker simplicity that's so beautiful to me! or that wonderful nautical look that I love too.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one! 😊 Thank you so much! We are happy with how it turned out. I loved those hooks…we debated over putting just a couple up, but I didn’t think it would look right, so we filled the wall…LOL That’s what I like about the color and style, it has versatility for however I want to decorate it! 😊 Love and hugs sweet friend! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!! ❤
DeleteYou measure the same way I do. I’m also not allowed to use power tools. I love the dark graphite color (or is it black.?)- it makes a striking contrast with the white walls.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving!
Thank you so much Melissa! The color is called Carbonite. And it depends on the light in the room whether it looks the dark graphite or charcoal, black, or navy. A great color...we actually used it again the laundry room and it looks totally different in there! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
DeleteOk Benita, that apple pie is delicious looking, but it's the picture of your gorgeous wall that's making me drool. Wow! I am so impressed. And power tools are not my thing. They make me cringe. A sewing machine and a glue gun are as power tool-y as I get!! ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Kim! The hubster can do impressive things…and I’m so thankful for that. I’m dangerous with the glue gun and haven’t used a sewing machine in years…I find it’s best to stay away from things that will hurt me and others…LOL Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Love and hugs!
DeleteTurned out wonderful! Adds so much interest to that area.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! We think it made a huge improvement and broke up all the white! Love and hugs and hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
DeleteI am still laughing.. I have no idea what the difference is with tools as well. You should have seen us building our greenhouse. LOL
ReplyDeleteFun post! And amazing idea, it looks great.
Honey, I am just the worst with tools…it is just best for me to stay out of the way and I’m quite sure the hubster prefers it that way. I recently had an incident with spray paint…now I’m not allowed to touch that either…LOL Thank you so much! Love and hugs!
DeleteLovely post …
ReplyDeleteI do agree "Apple pie with whipped cream and nutmeg is pretty, right?!?"
Absolutely
All the best Jan
Thank you Jan! YES, apple pie with whipped cream and nutmeg is always pretty..LOL Have a great one!
