One Room Challenge: Week 3

Well folks, here we are again with an update on Linda's Calling It Home: One Room Challenge.

We are now at the halfway point and I have still not been able to make a decision about the vanity for our half bath.  The vanity seems to be the true "challenge" for this room.  This bathroom is a very narrow space and most of the vanities I like are not manufactured in smaller sizes....figures, right?!

The other challenge is color...for the vanity and the top of the wall.  I am usually NOT this indecisive about paint colors.....I think it is just the "new house smell" that is throwing me off!

The bottom color, where the board and batten will be, is going to be Colonial White Semigloss.  Why?  Because that is what color the trim is throughout the house and I don't want to repaint the trim in this bathroom to a high gloss white because it will not even begin to match the rest of the house.  *See the disclaimer about "new house smell" and my severe OCD tendencies....and the fact that the hormone medication is no longer being manufactured!  November has turned into Juvember as far as the hubster is concerned...LOL*

I had originally wanted to use a piece of furniture in this room, but haven't been able to find a piece that would work with the dimensions.  After looking around online a bit more, I did find this piece from Home Depot...

It's the right size and I really like the shape of it.  The issue I'm having is that it is black, which wasn't a color I had considered for this space, and the fact that the top is a bright white.  The Colonial White is an off-white and I'm concerned about color-clash.

One huge positive about this vanity is that it is on sale...YAY.  Big negative...I won't be able to use the current faucet and will have to purchase one of those stick faucets.  I'm old fashioned...I like a two-handler.

Another negative....it has to be ordered, which will literally push me right down to the wire on this bathroom!

In the words of the immortal Gilda Radner's Rosanne Rosannadanna, "it's always something."

  1. Mmmmm, with your lack-of-hormone-meds-issue.... Mmmmmmm.... Should you be pushing yourself, to do this project in a specific time frame? Guess it's fun to join such a thing. But.............

Don't want you exploding, over getting this done, on time!

And I betcha' hubster wouldn't like you exploding, either. Just think! It would certainly spoil the work he has done so far, for you, on this project. It would!!!!!!!

Yes, I am an evil old gal! Making giggle sounds, about you and your project and your hormonal-challenged-self. Bad... Bad... Bad..... -looking ashamed-

But bet hubster is laughing though. NOT in front of you. Of course not! He's a smarter man than that.

Good grief! Will I actually publish this totally nutty comment??????????????

    Yes! Of course I will...

    Pumpkin hugs,

    1. I love your comments and am always glad that you hit the "publish" button! :-) We have had the discussion of me biting off more than I can handle while my hormone meds are up in the air. :-) Yes, it is fun to see everyone's progress on these types of projects, but our schedule is hectic most of the time, so it is hard for me to participate...even though I do enjoy the pressure...LOL. I'm sick that way! :-) Pumpkin love and hugs back to you my sweet friend!

    1. LOL…it is just paint, that’s for sure and can always be changed! I do too and also when I’m under a lot of pressure. The hubster doesn’t like my manic hormone-filled projects…wonder why??!! LOL. Hope you had a wonderful weekend!! Hugs!!

    1. The legs are definitely what sets this vanity apart. And I wanted something with some different lines...was just hoping for a vintage piece...might be able to make this one work though. Hugs!!

  4. I like that vanity! You can always paint it! As far as the different whites.....we recently had our bathroom counter top re-tiled (yeah, very old and any other counter top would have been over the top expensive because it has to be custom cut). Of course we could not find the same old white tile that is all over the bathroom so our guy used white subway tile. I don't even notice anymore the difference in the whites.....just food for thought!

    1. I think I could work with the different color whites with the right accessories. I suppose it will all come down to what color I plan to use on the top of the wall, above the board and batten. And yes, I think this vanity could definitely be sanding a little and painted…maybe some distressing would help it not look so “new”! :-) Hugs!!

    1. LOL...you are so funny! You always have some wonderful input and I'm glad you share it!! Deadlines are stressful and normally, I work really well under pressure and with a deadline looming. Unfortunately, our travel schedule is what is kicking me on this one...there is nothing I can change about that and have to work within the confines of "work"...ugh!! I'm ready for retirement! :-) Love and hugs and thank you so much!

  6. I loved Gilda Radner. She has been gone so long now. Well, if it had been me, I would have gotten on Pinterest and looked for "alternate" repurposed sinks and vanities. I've seen some sinks that were literally big galvanized buckets. "The unexpected." My motto is: "When you can't make something work, look w-a-y outside of the box. Hell, walk away from the damned box. And find something truly unique."

    1. I did too Brenda…she was so awesome and her characters were also so funny. She has been gone quite a while but will never be forgotten….saddened by Maureen O’Hara’s death this weekend also. That was one great actress. I am definitely wanting “outside of the box” on this one…our problem has been finding something that we can alter dimension-wise and still hold on to the ability for it to carry the weight of the sink. We did look at some “floating” sink options as well.

  7. Love the vanity. Like you I would be concerned about the off white trim and the gloss white top. You are so right it's always something. Hugs!!! Have a great weekend.

    1. Thanks so much! It is one of those things for me, but if I go with this vanity, maybe I can blend accessories to blend the "whites"...yes, it is always something...LOL. Hope you had a great weekend! Hugs!!

  8. I love the shape of the vanity but would be afraid it would arrive in pieces to put together. At least you could easily paint it then. I am crazy about whites not matching. Unless I add even more whites. Then I tell myself it was a design decision.

    1. It will definitely be in pieces and that worries me…the top could be cracked and then you have to deal with the return and reorder. If I can find some accessories to blend the whites together, then it will definitely be a design decision. Normally, it wouldn’t bother me, but in this small room, I’m afraid it might annoy me if I can’t find what I want to put on the walls. Still kicking around the mirror idea though.

  9. Oh Benita , I don't have much input here .......You said you really liked the one from Home Depot, you didn't mention the word LOVE. Don't settle on something your "iffy" about , you'll regret your decision . I used to have weird dream's going thru menopause, maybe it'll come to you in your dream's . Lol Good luck hon :)) Love & hug's, TT

    1. LOL...I have weird dreams all the time...the hubster gets afraid sometimes...LOL. Exactly....I'm not LOVING it...but I do like it! I figure if I keep looking, the right thing will just fall into my inbox...LOL Love and hugs chickie!

    1. No ma’am I’m not….I am definitely going to have to let go of the deadline….our travel schedule has trumped. And, when it’s right for the space, the colors and everything else will fall into place! :-)

  11. I have no doubt you will find exactly the right piece that will call out to your heart! That's how it went with my renovations - I kept searching and searching (Pinterest was a huge help!) and at the end of the day when all was said and done I wouldn't change a single thing!!! Good luck!

    1. Thank you so much! I'm with you, when it is the right thing, it will fall into place and then I won't be sweating it so much! I don't want to get something I'm not satisfied with and won't be happy with a year from now! Hugs!!

  12. I agree with you about the white, Benita. I really like this vanity, and black...come on, now, you are speaking to the lady who believes that there should be a dash of black in every room ;) Maybe I will make a convert out of you, haha. Good luck with your bathroom!

    1. LOL…I like the shape and style of this vanity…just wish it had an ivory top then I would be sold. And I have not shown photos of the rest of the house…my bed is black, as are our night tables and chest of drawers and the mirror that props against the wall. The guest bedroom has the same…a black bed and black bedside tables and a black/white chair….I do seem to have black in every room, now that I think about it…so why not this little bathroom…LOL It is just one of those colors that is easy to work with and that I’ve become attached to over the years! :-) Thank you so much! Hugs!!

  13. It's hard to tell from a couple thousand miles away but I wonder if the proportions are out on this? It seems that the mirror is about 5 ft wide and the vanity is only at most 3 ft wide? Would the small dainty looking vanity be dwarfed by the top heavy mirror, regardless of color? I wonder it you need something chunkier ie solid base to support that one of a kind mirror? When I wonder about size I go old school and break out the graph paper or even computer graph paper and draw it out to scale - it puts things in perspective and helps make decisions - lets you try it before you buy it - test it out and see what you think. :)

    1. And that is another one of the issues...you are exactly right. I'm worried about the mirror, which spans the entire bathroom overpowering the vanity. It is a small space...with width of the bathroom is just a little over 3 feet wide. The mirror is exactly 3 feet across and the vanity is not quite 2 feet wide. While it doesn't sound like a huge difference, I think it would be when looking at it...see, I'm like a dog chasing my tail...LOL

  14. Benita,
I say, "pass on the Home Depot vanity." If you have that many issues with it, you will never be totally happy with it. You will find the right vanity.

    1. Judy, those were the hubster’s exact words. He thinks I’m trying to force it so that I can get this project completed…it has turned into something way more complicated than I thought it would be. :-/

    1. Well, Darrielle, if you lived closer, then I wouldn't be having this problem! LOL I could just go shopping at your place or have you find something wonderful for me! :-D

  16. I do like the vanity...but if you don't want black and you are just settling...I say keep looking and don't stress over 'the challenge'!
Like you I have some OCD too, and the 2 different whites would drive me bonkers...it's like IKEA frames...white frame/off white mat...drives me batty - I have to have the same color white...and I certainly wouldn't repaint the trim either!
Ugh...I feel your pain, we went through the exact same thing with our bath remodel...wonky size vanity = a lot of searching! But you will find it, it exists and whatever you decide I know if will be beautiful!!
    Hugs!!

    1. Yeah, the vanity is so cute and black was definitely not the choice for this room. I could get it and paint it, but it doesn’t solve the “white” issue. And I can take the different color whites, sometimes…only sometimes, if I can find a way to blend the differences together, like with accessories or something. If this were the only issue I had with this space, I think I could work with it, but I’m still in a quandary over the color for the mirror, what accessories am I going to be using and what color is going above the board and batten. I’ve determined that the deadline is not going to be my determining factor, since some additional traveling has come in to the picture….it’s always something! LOL Hugs!!
