During my KonMari (Komodo) organization fit, I found some old bottles/vases under the kitchen sink. My first thought was to toss them or give them to the local thrift shop. My second thought was "what project can I make out of these?"
I recently saw a segment on Home and Family (seems to be my go-to lately) where Kym had made some reed diffusers out of old bottles. Sooooo, I decided to make reed diffusers using some of the essential oils I'm using for my homemade soaps. This project is super duper easy peasy! Takes no time at all and your home smells wonderful when you finish.
First up was the Spice Diffuser.
I used:
1/4 cup Sweet Almond Oil
7 drops Cinnamon
7 drops Clove
7 drops Orange
7 drops Vanilla
For my Energizer Diffuser (which I have in my office), I used:
1/4 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
10 drops of Peppermint
10 drops of Orange
I made one for the hubster's office using:
1/4 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
7 drops Eucalyptus
7 drops Cedarwood
7 drops Peppermint
In each container I blended the oils with the reed sticks. I used 7 sticks in each container and after about an hour, flipped them over.
If you want a stronger scent you can definitely add more of the oils, but I would give it a day or two. I added the metal snowflakes I found on clearance after the holidays (29 cents a pack) to give them a winter-ish look.
I'm glad I decided to use these little bottles instead of tossing them out...now on to see what else I can find to repurpose...

That's super duper cool! I love fragrance, but I have to be oh, so careful. I had a diffuser once in our home (guest BR), and Mr. P. is hyper sensitive. Even after I got rid of the diffuser oil container, I left the saturated reeds in a floral arrangement. After YEARS he could still smell it! Nonetheless, this was a great little upcycle!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Rita! I too have to be careful with some scents. I'm sensitive to some of them but not all. They drive my sinuses up a wall! Thank you again, I'm enjoying this finding new uses for things! :-) Love and hugs!
DeleteThis is so great Benita. I love that your re loved these bottles into something pretty and smelling so great.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday.
Hugs,
Kris
Thank you so much Kris! I think some of these little projects are going to turn in to Christmas presents for friends and family! The reed diffusers will have to be made right at Christmas, but I can start holding onto bottles now and know that they will have a use! 😊 Hope you are having a great week! Love and hugs!
DeleteLove this! It's a shame to throw away cute little bottles and this is a perfect craft for using them. Essential oils is a much better way to infuse a scent into a room without any nasty chemicals. Enjoy your Sunday. Freezing rain here...ugh...
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Donna! I hated to toss them also because they were cute shapes and I like using chemical-free things in my home. I'm glad I remembered that segment on Home and Family. I'm finding so many cute projects from that show. Hope you are having a great week. We have cold weather again and rain. I'm still holding out for some snow! :) Love and hugs!
DeleteWhat a clever idea you smart girl!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Thank you so much! You’ve got some pretty clever ideas going on at your house also! Love and hugs!
DeleteGreat upcycle and they're so pretty, Benita. I'll bet your house smells wonderful too!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Ann! I do love them and like that when the scent needs refreshing, I just turn the reeds over or add some more oil! I like easy and great-smelling things! :-) Hugs!
DeleteHi Benita! Happy Sunday!! Such a delightful idea! I make my own foot lotion by mixing Bond Boby Lotion in a small bottle with 10 drops of lavender oil and 10 drops of peppermint oil! I love it and I use it faithfully, every night! It’s so relaxing! Your idea reminds me of this and I can not wait to try it! Thank you for another fantastic use of my much loved essential oils!!
ReplyDeleteLucy, that sounds wonderful! I may have to give that a try. My oldest son sells aroma beads and such and they gave me a lavender/peppermint sachet for Christmas! I loved it and it smells wonderful hanging in my closet. Lavender and peppermint are so great together! You are very welcome...just adjust the amount of oil to suit you! Hugs!
DeleteSo cool. We keep a diffuser going in our bedroom- love it. These are super cute! Great idea...
ReplyDeleteThank you ma'am! I want to get one for our bedroom. A friend let me use hers as a test run and we really liked it. I slept so much better. These little bottles are great for scents in other rooms of the house! Love and hugs!
DeleteThose little snowflake additions are just darling!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! They needed something to adorn them since the bottles were plain. I had snowmen and snowflakes...snowflakes won out! :-) Love and hugs!
DeleteBrilliant Benita. I find old stuff hanging around and I think about what I can do with it and then...and then, ;( I get busy with something else and I still have old stuff hanging around. Hugs
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! LOL…you are too funny! I have that same problem…I run across something, think I’m going to use it and then forget about it until I run across it again. I’ve made a point to leave it out on the counter until I use it, which makes me do something with it because it drives me crazy sitting on the counter. 😊
DeleteI love reed diffusers, thanks for the recipes, sweet friend!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome and thank you! I love them too, they emit just the right amount of fragrance! Love and hugs!
DeleteNow I know what to do with all those little jars collecting dust in my pantry! :)
ReplyDeleteLove to you,
rue
Yes ma’am, those little bottles are perfect for these. I have a few more I need to use but will save them to make Christmas gifts. So great to see you back! Love and hugs to you!!
DeleteFun idea.. how is it working? I must do something wrong with reed diffuser, because I can never smell mine. Or my nose is frozen. LOL That might be it, woke up to -15 this morning.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Wow, -15. I would be frozen to a Popsicle and couldn't smell anything either!LOL They are working pretty well...I keep turning the reeds. I did end up adding a few more drops of the scented oils because I wanted mine a little stronger...but they do smell good! Love and hugs!
