Closing, Moving and Catastrophes, Part One...

I didn't plan on being away so long but life happens and flies right on by without even a nod in your direction.  Unfortunately, it did manage to stick it's foot out and kick me in the butt!

I'm going to give you the Reader's Digest diary version...believe me, it is best that way.

We were supposed to close on March 15th but rescheduled for March 13th.  That closing didn't make it, nor did the closing scheduled for March 15th.  Reset for March 16th...that one didn't take either.  Why all of the delays?  The builder couldn't get a Certificate of Occupancy due to the fact that no irrigation system had been installed.  Here in our city, it is mandatory with new construction.  UGH! Thankfully, the builder let us have access to the house to get a few things done.  Our appliances (washer, dryer, refrigerator) were delivered on Friday, March 17th.  The dryer had to be returned and a new delivery date/time was set.

I woke up on Sunday, March 19th with a sore throat...figured it was a result of allergies and stress.  We finally closed on Monday, March 20th.  That afternoon the half bath toilet started leaking at the base.  We turned off the water in that bathroom, called the builder and waited for an appointment with the plumber.  By that evening, I'm really sick...with I don't know what.  Whatever it is gets progressively worse each day...but we still proceed with moving.  Moving was sssllllloooowwww and unpacking has been even slower...I hate being sick!

The blind guy arrived on Thursday to install blinds, the plumber arrived on Friday the 24th to reset the toilet and replace a broken seal.  The new dryer, the cable guy, our new bed from Wayfair and our new IKEA furniture also arrived on the 24th.  The house had a revolving door that day!  The cable guy cut himself, ran down the stairs dripping blood and whining like a 4-year-old and I was still sounding like that "hello doll" chick on The Andy Griffith Show. Communication between me and the dryer delivery guy was comical...I couldn't speak Spanish and he couldn't speak "hello doll" English.

Monday, March 27th, I'm still sick...still can't eat and my weight has dropped to a very unhealthy number...gah!! As I was brushing my teeth that morning, I heard a gurgling sound from the sink.  I turned off the water and the noise stopped.  After brushing my teeth (don't you love these details?), I decided I would try to clean the tub in the master bath...it still contained some construction residue.  While scrubbing the tub, and yes, I knew I should be in bed, I hear the gurgling noise again.  I turn off the water, look over by the shower and see about 2 inches of water flooding the floor...coming out of the drain in the shower.  I grabbed every towel I could, threw them all on the floor and called the hubster.  He in turn called the builder.  Another visit from the plumber on Tuesday evening and they resolved the problem....2 1/2 hours later.  You know what else they had to come back to do??!!  Anyone? Anyone?  Yep, Wednesday morning they had to come back to finish re-setting the master toilet...another broken seal.  Pfft...lots of words were muttered under my breath!  And they were not "please" and "thank you".

I am, however, very thankful that we have concrete floors downstairs or there would be quite a bit of construction mess going on with the installation of new flooring.

This past weekend I finally started feeling better and have been able to get a few things in place.  I've also been eating everything that isn't nailed down...thankfully!  The hubster has been amazing!!  He moved us, took care of me, made sure I was getting meds and rest, installed the new chandelier in our master bedroom closet, installed the new light fixture in the laundry room, changed out door knobs, put all of the new furniture together,  programmed our remotes for the garage door....all the while working at work and tackling the "honey-do" list!

Sooooo (sorry, honey), I will share a few more updates and photos in the next post.  One big mess...that's how we roll!

  1. Oh no, you poor dear girl! Benita, I had no idea, just figured you were very busy. But very busy and sick as a dog on top of moving-in repairs? I'm so sorry! It will get better, it just has to. You've earned it, you and Edward. Rewards are ahead but drink your orange juice and no relapses, you hear?

Sending love and prayers your way,
    Dewena

I'm ready to get some things done but am definitely going to pace myself so that there are no illness relapses! :-) Love and miss you!!

  2. Oh honey! That's got to be one of the worst moving stories I've ever heard. Holy crap. I'm glad it's over though and you had Hubster there to take care of you.

I was just going to write you when I saw your email, because I had been thinking about you. Now I know why.

Many hugs and much love, my sweet friend,

  5. Calamity seems to follow you in the house department but it makes great content on your blog! I sincerely feel for you for all the disasters and being sick on top of it all. I really believe there is a bright light for you and the hubster on the other side of this! xoxo

I fully believe that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger and I should be about as strong as the Michelin Man right now...LOL Things are finally settling down and I'm looking forward to getting started on some projects! 6. Benita, this is one horrifying moving tale! You poor soul, feeling poorly is bad enough but to have all this other stuff rain down on you is just too much. Plumbing issues are never fun...ugh... Kudos to hubs for really stepping up and doing what needed to be done. xoxo

    1. You know Donna, most of the time I feel like I’m in an episode of “The Twilight Zone” and that someone is sitting back having a good laugh…lol What I’ve found though is that everyone has some type of bad experience with moving or a new home or building or something like that. I definitely do not like plumbing issues…because you just feel so helpless while it’s happening. Yep, the hubster is definitely my hero!! Love and hugs!!

  7. Oh my gosh, you poor thing!! I moved into my house two years ago this Sunday....in the midst of a horrible ice storm, and with the worst flu I have ever had! I had to stand outside in the ice storm directing the movers which door to bring each piece of furniture in (two doors downstairs, two upstairs) the whole time I thought I was going to die! Somehow I managed to survive the day, get a bed made up and a fire in the woodstove, and thawed some soup from the freezer. I was sick for about two weeks, it was awful! I completely sympathize with you, my sweet friend, and I'm so glad you are feeling better! Your new home is gorgeous, and you'll be so happy there once you get all the kinks worked out! xoxo

    1. Bless your heart, that is horrible!!! I've moved in snow and ice before but never while I was sick, I cannot imagine. Moving is so stressful and when something else happens, it just seems to compound the amount of stress! So glad you made it through that ordeal!!

Thank you so much! I'm happy to be in the house and feeling better. Now, to tackle some of those projects I want to get done! Love and hugs!!

  9. You are lucky you didn't have a huge water leak to contend with, but still sounds like more than enough to suffer through in a short period of time. Hope you get well soon. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your new home.

    1. I don’t think my nerves would have held up through a major leak! These small issues were enough to send me to the sofa for some much needed rest! 😊 Thank you so much! We are looking forward to getting some projects started too! Love and hugs!

  10. Girl! Wow, you guys really know how to stir things up, don't you?? This is insane. It's a wonder you didn't end up in the hospital, but I'm really glad to hear you're on the mend. All that crap that went on after the closing - I'm sure you were just totally deflated. I know the feeling of the revolving door. We've had a lot of things go right in our renos, but there have been a few speed bumps too. Water is my worst fear, as I have had more than my share in previous home ownerships.
Looking forward to more updates on your home. What I see looks totally cozy and comfortable.
And oh yea, that sentence that started, "The blind guy arrived on Thursday..." had me smiling. With your gift of prose, I wasn't sure where you were taking us on that one...

    1. LOL...yes, Rita, we do!! We have some crazy issues when we move, that's for sure. The hubster was afraid I was going to end up with pneumonia...thankfully, I started getting better and those meds worked! I'm with you on water...that and electrical problems...they are both so expensive to repair!! Yeah, the hubster ribbed me about calling him "the blind guy"...LOL Love and hugs!!

    1. I think an apartment would be perfect…no stress when things break down and definitely for close to the same price!! The hubster likes having his garage space and outdoor space, and I get that. We hope problems are done and that we can now get down to business and change out a few things. Thank you so much Miss T….you are so sweet! He is a great guy and has been awesome through the entire process!! I’ve definitely had to rest and take it easy…the body dictates. I’m just so glad I’m feeling better and can think clearly for a change! 😊 Love and hugs sweet friend!! ❤

  12. Hi Benita,
I was getting anxiety about the gurgling...I know what that means! I'm glad you got it all sorted out and I'm hoping there will be an absence of repairmen in your future! Moving...ugh. But the house looks great and you are feeling better, which is the important thing. Get in there and eat another hamburger. Double cheese. You've earned it. ;)

    1. I didn't know before, but now I do...that sound was horrible and I never want to hear it again!! LOL I don't want to see another repairman for quite some time, but we have had to call the people who installed the irrigation system because it's not working. This house is definitely nicknamed "dances with water" because that seems to be what we are constantly dealing with...LOL. And yes, I have been eating like crazy! :-) Love and hugs!!

  17. You are a real trooper., Benita! I'm a total baby when I'm sick, but then again I know how much you have waited for this moment. Plumbing problems can be the worst with all the mopping and smells and mess...not to mention if you have to turn off the water for a long time and wonder where the heck to 'go', if you know what I mean!

Glad things are moving along again. I love your living room...the furniture and the googeous fireplace. We share much of the same taste.

Best of luck from here on and glad to hear you are recuperating!

    1. Thank you so much Jane! Notice that I didn’t include the fact that I whined and complained constantly about being sick…LOL. I’m a big baby also but I was so determined to get into this house. I told the hubster if he even mentioned moving to me he would probably get a sock in the jaw! 😊 And yes, water/plumbing problems are the worst…I was very concerned about that issue also and was so thankful that my inlaws house was not too far away.

Thank you very much! I noticed that we had similar tastes also because I just love your furniture!! It’s so pretty! Thank you again…I’m hoping life settles down for a bit so I can get my rear in gear and get my “to do” list started. Love and hugs sweet friend!

  18. Oh no!! Being sick is the worst, especially when you have a lot going on ....in the middle of a move? Disastrous. I am so sorry that you had so many mishaps with the move. I hope that they are all straightened out now. I also hope that since it's been a few days since you wrote this, you are feeling even better. Congratulations on the house. It is beautiful and I know once you are feeling better and get settled, you are going to enjoy it. Take care my friend. xoxo

    1. It was definitely not a good time to be sick! It seems that with each move we have more bizarre events taking place…LOL I think we need a good priest with some awesome exorcism skills….LOL Thank you so much! I’m just glad to have some of these problems settled and to be feeling better. It was awful to not even be able to stay there or to enjoy the house. Love and hugs!!

  19. Good Lord, this has been quite a journey for you guys!! I'm glad you're feeling better, at least. Ugh, I wish the moving in process had been easier. Heaven knows, you deserved an uncomplicated move! I will say, though, that you piqued my curiosity when you mentioned a chandy in your closet..... ;)

    1. It seems that it is always some bizarre journey for us…LOL. You would think I would be used to it by now! Yes, uncomplicated would be great, but I don’t know it is ever going to work that way for us…LOL. I found the cutest little light for my closet…it’s not a chandelier in the normal sense, it is more of a 4 sided hanging light, but it worked perfectly in there. I think (but can’t remember…too much going on) I posted a photo of it on Instagram prior to getting it put in place. I can’t wait to see all the changes in your bedroom! Hope you have a most wonderfully blessed Easter! Love and hugs!!
