A Small Fall Project...

As you know, my DIY projects have been a complete hit or miss.  I don't seem to have an in-between where they turn out sort of okay.

I've seen all sort of projects on the internet involving terra cotta pots, so I thought I would make a fall gift for one of my friends.  I mean, how hard can it be, right??!!  Well...

I started with a few basic supplies:

...black craft paint
...cheap sponge brush
...100 grit sandpaper
...Terra Cotta pots - large and small
...burlap ribbon
...peel and stick labels
...fabric leaves
...fall tags
...bag of fake pumpkins
...hot glue/gun

I started by mixing a few drops of black paint with a few drops of water and painted my pots.

The color can be as dark or as light as you want it to be, just add more (or less) water to your paint.  Painting falls at a Level One on my KDS (kindergarten difficulty scale), so I was good to go.

After the pots dried, I sanded them with the sandpaper to distress them a bit...so far so good...

Now, here's where the project gets a little dicey...I had to use the glue gun to attach the burlap ribbon and fall tags to the pots...

Here's my disclaimer:  glue guns are hot (see the "Beware" in red above - the glue gun even has a "Beware" sign on it)!  If you try this project and you burn yourself (I speak from experience), it is not my fault!

A little side note...your nails will melt if you get too much hot glue on them...just sayin'...

After finishing the large pots, I worked on the smaller pots.  I used peel and stick labels in gold (I've got great peel-n-stick skills...just letting you know).

I hot-glued the fall leaves on the rim of the smaller pots...

...then opened up my small bag of pumpkins and placed one on each pot.

I love the silver and copper together.  The black paint looks brown on the pots, which is perfect for fall.

There you have it...fall decor and a gift!  Hope she likes it! :-)

  3. Benita,
Yes, put this project in the success column. I spied those great peel-and-stick skills right away, before you mentioned it. :) I, too, know all about hot glue gun burns. So far I haven't melted my acrylic nails.

Your friend will more than like these!

  4. Well, those are super cute. I was afraid you were going to say the hot glue gun stuck to the counter or, worse, cracked it (that can happen with too much heat on quartz, did you know??)

  6. Great job Miss DIY!!! These are so pretty. I love the copper and silver together too. My finger tips are burnt off with making the advent calendars with the glue gun. So I feel your pain. Happy New Week.

    1. Thank you so much Donna! The glue gun is NOT my friend…I don’t use it any more than I have to. I liked the break from traditional color with the copper and silver…just something different. UGH…I am soooooo not ready for the holidays…I need to postpone it a bit longer! 😊 Have a great week!

  8. Well I adore your Fall projects. And I honestly love Copper with a lot of different colors and decor. AWESOME job Benita. Oh girl, I am so dangerous with a hot glue gun! I have some scars to prove it too. I try now to be so careful. Loving how your pretties turned out. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

    1. Thank you so much! I love copper also and use it during the fall and sometimes during the winter in my Christmas decorations. I'm a menace with the hot glue gun. I try to avoid it as often as I can! Thank you again! Love and hugs!

    1. Thank you so much! LOL...I'm the same way...Edward usually takes them out of my hand and will use the sharp object for me...I'm deadly and he doesn't like that I might occasionally watch Snapped...doesn't want me getting any ideas...LOL Love and hugs!
